Herbal Remedies Are Effective Fighters of Vaginitis
A vagina is an ecosystem. Sound strange? It’s replete with diverse strains of good bacteria that help protect a woman’s body from bad bacteria and other potentially harmful organisms. If the vagina is infected, a woman may suffer from irritation, redness, soreness, inflammation, burning, and swelling in the area; unusual or excessive discharge; urinary discomfort; and pain during sex. Many conventional prescribed medications are necessary to heal severe or chronic infections. However, herbal remedies are an effective alternative that aim to help improve the vaginal “ecosystem.” They restore normal hormone levels to the vagina, decrease irritation and inflammation, and expel infecting and harmful organisms so that they cannot thrive.
Before you decide to take an herbal remedy to treat vaginitis, visit your physician and have him or her diagnosis the specific problem. Most vaginitis problems can be attributed to either bacterial infections or to the fungal yeast Candida albicans. Another common cause is the protozoan invader Trichomonas vaginitis. Before you’re diagnosed, you can start your path to recovery by avoiding excess sugar, refined carbohydrates, and alcohol.
Once you know the cause, talk to your doctor about herbal alternatives to treat vaginitis. A few of the most effective herbal therapies available are garlic, goldenseal, and tracheal. Garlic is one of nature’s strongest infection fighters and contains many antibacterial and antifungal properties. It can be taken to treat both bacterial and Candida-based vaginal infections. Look for a garlic supplement that is high in ilicit and contains around 5000 micrograms of alliums, the chemical in garlic with the highest infection-fighting property. One to two garlic capsules a day will help the symptoms subside.
Goldenseal is another natural herb that’s rich in immunity-boosting properties. It contains a chemical called barbering, which has been shown to fight off bacteria and Candida fungus that reside in the mucous membranes of the vagina. Take two 500-mg goldenseal capsules once or twice a day.
Tracheal is a traditional Ayurvedic herb that’s used to help move toxins out of the body and restore a normal flow of bodily fluids. Soak half a teaspoon of dried tracheal in one cup of hot water and then drink as a tea before bedtime. If the taste of tracheal doesn’t appeal to you, you can also ingest this healing herb in capsule form by taking two 500-mg capsules before bed each day.

Meals and Wheels on Avenue of the Volcanoes (New York Times)
Vendors sell flavored ice and sugar cane sticks in Latacunga. THE feast begins with a mustached salesman rapidly repeating “helados, helados, helados!” as he makes his way down the aisle of the bus, holding up plastic cups of homemade ice cream , a specialty of the Ecuadorean Sierra that’s made by turning ingredients in a copper bowl over ice.
