Herbal Remedies Can Conquer the Common Cold

You duck at the first sign of a sneeze, you wash your hands compulsively when your work or school is filled with sniffles, and you thought you’d outwit the cold season this year. But inevitably you get a cold anyway. Your doctor gives you the same old “Take an over-the-counter remedy and rest” advice, but you’re tired of putting your life on hold for a week or more until you can function again. Is there anything more you can do to soothe the common cold? Is there any method other than living by a faucet and dodging sneezes like bullets that can prevent colds? Yes, herbal remedies!

Colds are viruses that have overpowered your immune system. No two colds are the same strain of virus, so even when your immune system has finally developed the antidote to your cold, all it takes is a new strain of virus and you’re again logged down with headaches, body aches, fevers, coughing, a runny nose, and an overall feeling of weakness. This cold season, give an herbal remedy a chance to bolster your immune system and you may find yourself walking away scot-free. If you do come down with a cold, herbal remedies will help you combat the symptoms in record time—possibly only one or two days!

Echinacea has been used for centuries for treating colds and other upper respiratory problems. It has received some criticism lately, but it is effective. It works by boosting the production of immune cells that help fight disease. Most herbalists recommend taking echinacea in tincture, capsule, or tablet form, 175 to 225 mg two to three times a day, and preferably on an on-and-off schedule, as taking high doses of the herb on a constant basis may depress the immune system.

Goldenseal is believed to strengthen the immune system and help combat viruses. It can be used in conjunction with echinacea at the first sign of a cold by taking 175 to 350 mg of goldenseal three to four times a day for ten days.

Garlic is one of the most potent cold-fighters, natural or not. It’s recommended you consume a clove of fresh garlic—or if you prefer to get the immune-boosting properties of garlic without the odor, you can take one 300 to 500 mg deodorized garlic capsule—each day for the first week of a cold to keep the worst symptoms at bay

Meals and Wheels on Avenue of the Volcanoes (New York Times)
Vendors sell flavored ice and sugar cane sticks in Latacunga. THE feast begins with a mustached salesman rapidly repeating “helados, helados, helados!” as he makes his way down the aisle of the bus, holding up plastic cups of homemade ice cream , a specialty of the Ecuadorean Sierra that’s made by turning ingredients in a copper bowl over ice.
